What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

I prefer to use the Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapeutic model in my practice. It is not Family Therapy. This approach focuses on your internal attachments to aid in healing past attachment and other traumas. IFS was developed by Richard Schwartz in the 1980s. It is based on the idea that the mind is made up of different subpersonalities or "parts," each with its own perspectives, memories, and roles. IFS aims to help you understand and harmonize your internal parts to promote healing and self-awareness.

Core Concepts of IFS

  • Parts: IFS identifies three main types of parts:

    • Exiles: These are parts that carry pain, trauma, or negative experiences.

    • Managers: These parts try to maintain control and protect the individual from being hurt.

    • Firefighters: These parts emerge in response to crises, often using impulsive or distracting behaviors to manage emotional pain.

  • Self: The Self is considered the core of a person, characterized by qualities such as compassion, curiosity, and confidence. It serves as a leader to the parts.

  • Internal Dialogue: IFS encourages dialogue between the Self and the various parts to foster understanding and healing.

Goals of IFS Therapy

  • To help you identify and understand your internal parts.

  • To promote self-compassion and acceptance.

  • To facilitate healing of wounded parts and resolve internal conflicts.

  • To empower the Self to lead your internal system effectively.

Applications of IFS

  • Therapy for trauma and PTSD.

  • Addressing anxiety and depression.

  • Improving relationships and communication.

  • Enhancing personal growth and self-discovery.

Conclusion

Internal Family Systems is a powerful therapeutic approach that allows you to explore your inner landscape, fostering healing and integration of your Self. By understanding and working with your internal parts, you can achieve greater emotional well-being and a more harmonious internal experience.
